Building Content-Area and Academic Vocabulary

Research has shown that mastery of academic language is the single most important determinant of academic success in content-area learning.

Language for Learning (levels C-H, grades 3-8) provides strategies and practice for learning content-area vocabulary in the context of science and social studies with connections to mathematics.  Lessons include academic vocabulary that students encounter throughout their day from textbooks, on tests, and used by teachers during instruction.

A companion audio CD provides oral readings of all content-area selections and builds fluency with vocabulary.

  • Language for Learning aligns with the the 2006 TESOL English Language Proficiency Standards 1-5.
