Pinpoint Skill Ability Every student has reading skills they need to master, and GPS Reading for Ohio helps you to pinpoint what those skills are. The GPS Reading Pretest diagnoses the reading skills tested in Ohio that the student needs to focus on. Assign Skill Cards based on the questions missed, pinpointing the right skills for each student to practice. Pinpointing skills in need of attention means your classroom time is used efficiently--time is spent on only the skills the student has yet to master. This brings you the greatest boost in scores in the least amount of time.
Personalize Reading Level Every year, students are assessed on the reading skills that Ohio determines to be important for grade-level mastery. If they struggle to read grade-level content, you struggle to find materials that cover the right skills at the appropriate reading level. No need to do the hard work anymore--GPS Reading for Ohio does it for you! When you assign Skill Cards, personalize each student’s practice plan by selecting the appropriate reading level for each individual student. Each card is clearly marked with its reading level on the top of the card: two levels below grade (one dot), one level below grade (two dots), and on grade level (three dots). Every card is leveled using the Lexile Framework (click here for detailed Lexile levels by grade). Varied readability levels make learning accessible to all students, removing reading level as an obstacle to skill mastery.
Practice Ohio's Tested Skills The last step in the process is the most important: practice! In order to master Ohio's tested reading skills, students need plenty of skill practice. GPS Reading for Ohio has it! GPS Reading for Ohio kits contain between 387 and 441 distinct Skill Cards covering 43 to 49 skills commonly tested on state assessments. Plus, you get two copies of each card. Each skill is presented using three instructional approaches: graphic organizers ('A' cards), a "Think About" process ('B' cards), and directed text/explicit instruction ('C' cards). If the student needs additional practice after completing the 'A' card, there are two more opportunities for skill mastery.  Multiple lessons and three instructional approaches for each skill provide ample practice on tested skills and maximize opportunities for learning.

Built-In Monitoring and Progress Reporting

As students work through the necessary Skill Cards, you can easily determine the skills they're mastering and those that need more practice. Interim assessments called "Checkups" measure students' mastery of the skills in each strand. In addition, the GPS Reading Posttest provides a final measure of skills mastered and readiness for the test.

• Grades 2 and 3 have five Checkups to match their five covered strands; grades 4-6 have four Checkups to match their four strands.
• Checkups are included in the Reproducibles section of the Teacher Resource Guide.
